ELIZABETH CANTWELL, WSU President

Welcome to Washington State University! These first steps into your college journey mark more than just the start of classes; they are the beginning of a transformative experience that will shape how you think, how you lead, and how you interact with the world around you.

WSU is a place built for doers and problem-solvers. Here, you will be challenged to ask big questions, engage deeply with your community, and embrace the responsibility that comes with opportunity. Be curious. Take risks. Seek out people who will expand your perspective. Growth comes from stepping beyond what is familiar.

Most of all, remember that you’re not doing this alone. You’ve joined a network of Cougs who care about your success and want you to thrive. So, take a breath, be yourself, and get ready for an incredible journey.

We can’t wait to see what you accomplish here. Go Cougs!

CHRIS RILEY-TILLMAN, WSU Provost

Hello, Cougs! Welcome to Washington State University and the Cougar family! As you begin this exciting new chapter, I want to share one key piece of advice: get involved

At WSU Pullman, you’ll find more than 450 registered student organizations—whether you’re into robotics, the arts, service, or something entirely unique, there’s a place for you. You’ll also have access to hands-on research opportunities, one-of-a-kind recreation opportunities, and a dedicated community of faculty and staff who are here to support your success.

Strive for balance—prioritize your academics, but don’t forget to make time for friendships, fun, and personal growth. Explore new interests, connect with others, and step outside your comfort zone. This is your time to create a meaningful and memorable university experience.

Being a Coug means more than earning a world class education. It means becoming part of a strong, supportive network that lasts a lifetime.

We’re so glad you’re here. Go Cougs!

BLYTHE DUELL, Faculty Keynote

Welcome to Washington State University! This is an exciting and transformative time in your life! My biggest piece of advice is to be curious, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to seek support. You are not expected to have all the answers right away.

College isn’t just about attending classes, it’s about learning how to learn, discovering who you are, and figuring out what matters to you. You will grow the most when you engage deeply: show up to class, participate, talk to your professors (we want to hear from you!), and explore opportunities like clubs, research, and events.

Also, know that it’s normal to feel uncertain at times. Everyone is adjusting, even if they don’t show it. Use campus resources early and often: tutoring centers, counseling services, academic advising, and your professors’ office hours are there for a reason.

Finally, give yourself some grace. You’re here to grow, not to be perfect. We’re glad you’re here, and we’re cheering you on.

OLIVIA ALLISON, Sophomore Speaker

Starting a new school year at WSU can feel a little overwhelming at first, but once I embraced the change and stepped out of my comfort zone, I started building a Cougar family that changed my life. My advice? Say yes—join clubs that spark your interest and show up to as many events and games as you can. Whether you’re cheering on the Cougs at a football game, checking out a club fair, joining a bible study, or trying something totally new—like Greek life or swing dance club, like I did—you’ll meet people who share your interests and passions. These moments are where real connections form and where WSU starts feeling less like a campus and more like home. You’ll quickly realize this university is more than classrooms and dorms—it’s a community that genuinely has your back.

ISAAC VELAZQUEZ, ASWSU President

Opportunity is abundant here at WSU, so take advantage of it! While it may not be easy to find your footing in a new environment, discomfort is a natural part of growth. Explore your interests and discover what you love, whether it’s to launch your career, expand your learning, or engage with your hobbies. Never forget the phrase, “Cougs Help Cougs.” While everyone’s journey is unique, look for ways to uplift your fellow Cougs. There may be a time when you need to lean on your community, so know that there is always someone willing to help or a resource available; you just have to reach out. Finally, ASWSU is here to advocate for you. Looking to inspire large-scale change? Want to learn more about how university systems work? Not sure where to go for help? Get involved with ASWSU!
